Section 911 and taxation of U.S. citizens abroad:

The Treasury Deparment, last week, came out with its annual revisions relating to Section 911 of the tax code as it affects expatriates’ housing allowances.  The new tax legislation provides the Secretary of the Treasury with the authority to issue regulations or other guidance to adjust the general 30% housing exclusion percentage upward or downward based on geographic differences in housing costs relative to the
United States. It is intended that the Secretary make these adjustments on an annual basis.

EU unveils plan to dismantle big energy firms:

A new battle has begun over the next round of energy liberalisation. Commission proposals to complete the EU's internal market for gas and electricity are leaving France and Germany in a quandary, with EDF and E.ON facing either the dismantling of their transmission assets or tight regulatory restrictions.  http://www.euractiv.com/en/energy/eu-unveils-plan-dismantle-big-energy-firms/article-166890

Mixed responses to EU retail banking proposals:

U.S. Chamber Events & Highlights

 

U.S. Chamber to Hold AmCham IPR Workshop
On September 26, the U.S. Chamber is holding a ½ day workshop in Warsaw, Poland to discuss how businesses and AmChams can work together to help fight the growing threat of counterfeiting and piracy.  The latest EU trends and cooperation with U.S. officials will also be discussed. 

U.S. Chamber & BusinessEurope to Hold Regulatory Cooperation Conference
On October 2, the U.S. Chamber, in cooperation with BusinessEurope, will hold a conference on regulatory cooperation in Brussels, Belgium. 

U.S. Chamber 4th Annual Anti-Counterfeiting and Piracy Summit
The U.S. Chamber will hold a summit on “The Fight Against Counterfeiting and Piracy: A Global Responsibility” on October 2-3.

First Annual Eurasia Conference The Eurasia Business Platform will hold its on "Growth Imperatives and Regional Responsibilities" on December 3. 




American Chambers of Commerce Events & Activities
There are 43 American Chambers of Commerce (AmChams) in Europe and Eurasia, which are affiliated with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.


Belgium

On October 3, AmCham Belgium and the American Club of Brussels are holding their traditional joint Welcome Gala Dinner for the new US Ambassador to Belgium, Sam Fox.     

On October 23 AmCham Belgium will hold on a conference that will focus on Corporate Governance and Compliance and will be held in association with Iron Mountain, Deloitte and Eversheds. Speakers will address issues such as digital archiving, data security, tax and financial records in shared service centers across Europe as well as present a case study.

On  November 6, AmCham Belgium will host an exclusive lunch for patron members only which will give AmCham Belgium’s CEOs the opportunity to discuss the recommendations arising from the 2007/2008 Foreign Investors Agenda (FIA) with Ambassador Sam Fox.

On November 8, AmCham Belgium will host the last "Business After Hours" cocktail reception of 2007 with Stibbe, a Brussels-based full-service law firm.

On November 22, AmCham Belgium will host a CEO event for Patron and Sustaining members on "Ways to improve the net impact of senior executives’ compensation package".

Bulgaria

On October 9-11  the American Chamber of Commerce in Bulgaria, the Defense Acquisition University, and the U.S. Embassy in Bulgaria are organizing a seminar titled "Contracting Training of U.S. – Bulgaria Joint Training Facilities". The seminar is designed to teach contracting procedures to firms interested in the U.S. – Bulgaria joint training facilities and the upcoming business opportunities in the Middle East and other NATO and European countries. The training module will focus on current and future business opportunities and will include discussion regarding U.S. contracting procedures for the solicitation of tenders, evaluations and awarding of contracts.

Denmark

On October 9, AmCham Denmark will welcome guests to their Annual Ambassador's Reception.  The reception culminates with the announcement of the winner of AmCham's 2007 Entrepreneurship Award, an annual award recognizing excellence in entrepreneurship and innovation within private enterprise, and highlighting the significance of the trans-Atlantic trade relationship between Denmark and the US.  This is one of the Chamber's flagship networking events - an annual favorite - and is open to members and colleagues.

EU

On October 1 AmCham EU will host a reception to welcome new staff at the US Mission to the EU

On October16 AmCham EU will hold a Plenary Meeting with Deputy Head of Cabinet Reading as keynote speaker, on Flexicurity and the reform of labor markets

On October 17 AmCham EU will host a lunch with the European Parliament's Delegation for Relations with the United States

On October 22  AmCham EU's Competition Policy Committee will hold its annual conference

AmCham EU has just published two new guidebooks.

The first edition of Transatlantic Relations Made Simple gives a comprehensive introduction to the workings of both EU and US government systems.

The Guide to the European Parliament 2007 to 2009 is the most up-to-date information source available for contacts within the European Parliament. The eight edition of this highly successful publication describes the balance of power among the political groups, the key figures to watch, and full biographical details of all MEPs.

France

On October 15 AmCham France will host several top French officials for an investment seminar. 

On December 13, AmCham France will host a reception and concert to commemorate the birthday of Lafayette. 

Italy


From October 10 to the 14 AmCham Italy will hold a Mission of Top Entrepreneurs to Washington DC with a visit to the US Chamber of Commerce. The Mayor of Milan Letizia Moratti will also be part of the AmCham delegation. During the Mission the delegates will have a chance to participate at the annual NIAF Gala Dinner.

From November 25 to December 1 AmCham Italy will bring to Washington DC and Philadelphia a group of companies in the Biotechnology and Life Sciences sectors. The Mission will be a great opportunity to learn of new technologies and possibly to facilitate business and investments dealings between Italy and U.S. 
 
On December 6 AmCham Italy will host the second edition of the "Transatlantic Award Gala Dinner". The Gala will be held in Milan with the presence of the U.S. Ambassador to Italy Ronald P. Spogli and many other personalities.

 

Norway


On September 25, members and partners of AmCham Norway, SIMONSEN Advokatfirma, and Gambit Hill & Knowlton will join together for an Executive Roundtable discussion regarding the September 17 European Court of First Instance ruling on Microsoft vs. the EU. In conjunction with this ruling, Microsoft’s EMEA Director of Competition Law, Mr. Carel Maske, will address the verdict and its consequences. 

 On November 22, AmCham Norway business colleagues, Norwegian and American officials, and friends will come together for an authentic American Thanksgiving dinner complemented by California wines and entertainment. The evening's proceeds will be awarded to an AmCham selected charitable organization.

 Poland


The ECACC Fall meeting will take place in Warsaw from September 24 – 25.


On September 26 AmCham Poland will hold a  CEO Forum, sponsored by InterContinental and UPC. It will be a panel discussion focused on "Transatlantic Trends 2007 - an annual public opinion survey examining American and European attitudes toward the Transatlantic relationship."


On September 27th AmCham Poland will host a Business Mixer in Kraków.

On October 3AmCham Poland will hold their monthly meeting.

Sweden
