Ukraine admitted to the WTO

On February 5 Ukraine was admitted to the World Trade Organization. That achievement will facilitate Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko’s efforts to attract foreign investment. Kicking off that campaign on January 24 she held a two-hour meeting in Kyiv with 250 foreign investors. Then on January 28-29 Tymoshenko met with EU and NATO officials in Brussels. 

Georgian President Saakashvili to visit President Bush

President Bush will welcome President Mikheil Saakashvili of Georgia to Washington on March 19, 2008. The President looks forward to discussing a range of issues with President Saakashvili, including our common efforts to advance freedom and security around the world; Georgia's Euro-Atlantic aspirations; efforts to promote a peaceful resolution to the separatist conflicts in South Ossetia and Abkhazia within a unified Georgia; the Georgian government's ongoing democratic reform efforts, particularly in advance of parliamentary elections; and cooperation on energy security

EU mulls new measures to protect privacy on the Web 


European institutions have a range of initiatives in store which could lead to the imposition of clearer limits for the conservation of personal information by useful but occasionally privacy-breaching Internet technologies such as search engines.


US-EU set to open talks over regulation pact

The US and European Union last week agreed to start work on creating the first system of “mutual recognition” between their respective financial regulators under which both sides would recognise many of each other’s rules to allow cheaper and easier cross-border trading.

The move, agreed between Christopher Cox, Securities and Exchange Commission chairman, and Charlie McCreevy, EU internal markets commissioner, is another sign of how regulators are changing their behaviour to cope with the globalisation of capital markets.

  • On February 14, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce will host a National Dialogue on Energy Security: The Final Report.
  • On  March 11, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce will host: Health Information Technology: Increasing Transparency and Enhancing Quality and Value in America's Health Care.
  • On March 26, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce will host the 2nd Annual Capital Markets Summit

There are 43 American Chambers of Commerce (AmChams) in Europe and Eurasia, which are affiliated with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Belgium

  • On February 13, AmCham Belgium will host a conference titled,“The Role of the National Labor Council”.
  • On February 18, AmCham Belgium will host their Second Luncheon in their US Investor in the Spotlight series focusing on the US Banking sector in Belgium.

BritishAmerican Business

  • On February 28, BritishAmerican Business will host an afternoon seminar on Creating a Climate for Business Success, examining the role of technology as an agent in the development of sustainable business practice.
  • On March 6, BritishAmerican Business will hold a breakfast briefing on The 2008 Presidential Election: The Impact on British-American Business

Croatia

  • On February 7, AmCham Croatia will host an American citizens information night
  • On February 28, AmCham Croatia will host their    AmCham networking cocktail

Denmark

  • On March 12, AmCham Denmark will hold their Annual General Meeting. 
  • On March 27, AmCham Denmark invites its members to join a Business Breakfast featuring Richard Dunham, Washington Bureau Chief of the Houston Chronicle Newspaper. 

EU

  • On February 19, AmCham EU will host a plenary meeting with a “Super Tuesday” theme examining the outcome and implications of the US elections on Europe and on business.
  • On February 20 & 21, AmCham EU will be taking part in the European Business Summit in Brussels and exco will be running a Plenary meeting to coincide with the Summit.
  • On February 28, AmCham EU will host the launch event of its Globalisation Study, commissioned by the Executive Council. This event will feature European Commission President Barroso.


Hungary

  • On February 13, AmCham Hungary will hold a seminar on Company Transformations as an Effective Tool for M&A Transactions.
  • On February 16, AmCham Hungary, will hold the AmCham-Pannon Valentine's Day Ball 2008.

Poland

  • On  February 13, AmCham Poland will host their  February Monthly Meeting.
  • On February 14, AmCham Poland will hold a Valentine’s Day Mixer
  • AmCham Poland has designated 2008 as a “Green Year”.In 2008 AmCham Poland will focus on all things green as relevant to consumers and businesses. They have planned out a series of events that include a mix of panel discussions and activities. The events will touch on the wide variety of "green" topics from zero-energy buildings to carbon emissions, etc.

Sweden

  • On February 12 AmCham Sweden will hold “Business After Hours: Kairos Future "Tomorrow's Successful Leaders”
  • On February 21 AmCham Sweden will host an OSAC Seminar on "Criminality in Sweden"
  • On February 26 AmCham Sweden will host a Young Professionals Event.

TABA

  • On February 12, TABA/AmCham is organizing a press ball for the 20th anniversary of Economy Magazine.
  • On February 13, TABA/AmCham is organizing a Luncheon focusing on the “Industry Strategy of Turkey and New Term Industry Policies”.
  • On February 14, TABA/AmCham is holding a dinner.
  • On February 16 & 17, TABA/AmCham will host the eduguide International’s 3rd Annual Career Summit.

Ukraine

  • On February 19 AmCham Ukraine will hold its HR Committee Meeting.
  • On February 20, AmCham Ukraine will hold its Toastmasters Club Meeting.
  • On Monday, February 25, AmCham Ukraine will hold its Banking and Financial Services Committee Meeting.
  • On Wednesday, February 27, AmCham Ukraine will hold its IPR Committee Meeting.
